cybertruck delayed camera upgrade

While Tesla’s other vehicles got a major security upgrade this spring, the Cybertruck is still waiting for its turn. Tesla’s 2025 Spring Update brought B-pillar camera recording to Sentry Mode and Dashcam features, but the company’s newest truck couldn’t get the upgrade right away.

The B-pillar cameras sit between the front and rear doors on both sides of Tesla vehicles. When these cameras record, they capture areas that other cameras can’t see. This means Tesla’s security system now uses six cameras instead of four. The upgrade helps owners catch vandals who damage their cars from the sides.

Only newer Teslas with Hardware 4 can use this feature. These include Model S, Model X, Model Y, and Model 3 vehicles built from mid-2023 onward. These cars have AMD Ryzen processors that can handle the extra video streams. Older Hardware 3 vehicles don’t have enough processing power for the additional cameras.

The feature started rolling out in April 2025 with version 2025.14. Tesla employees got it first, then other owners. But Cybertruck owners had to wait, even though their trucks have the newest hardware.

Tesla employees received the B-pillar camera feature first in April 2025, followed by other owners, while Cybertruck drivers waited despite having compatible hardware.

Cybertruck Program Manager Siddhant Awasthi explained why. The truck’s hardware isn’t the problem. Instead, the Cybertruck uses a different software framework than other Tesla models. Features that work on Model S, 3, X, and Y cars can’t just transfer over. Engineers need to rebuild each feature specifically for the Cybertruck.

The Cybertruck’s unique platform lets it do things other Teslas can’t. It has a more efficient Sentry Mode system than other models. But this advanced technology means engineers can’t simply copy features from other vehicles. They must create custom versions for the truck. The truck did receive other improvements in the spring update, including Lane Departure Avoidance that warns and assists drivers when drifting out of their lane.

Tesla announced in August 2025 that B-pillar recording will come to Cybertruck soon. The company hasn’t said exactly when. The feature became a priority after vandalism incidents increased. Many Tesla owners asked for better side camera coverage to catch people damaging their vehicles. With the upgrade, the six-camera system creates a 240-degree security dome around the vehicle for enhanced protection. The B-pillar camera integration represents Tesla’s commitment to comprehensive monitoring for all their vehicle models.

Until the update arrives, Cybertruck owners must rely on their current camera setup. Their trucks still have Sentry Mode, just without the extra B-pillar camera views that other Tesla owners now enjoy.
