When Tesla launched the Model S Plaid in 2021, it promised the world’s quickest production car. The tri-motor setup generates 1,020 horsepower and 1,050 pound-feet of torque. This electric sedan rockets from zero to 60 mph in just 1.99 to 2.1 seconds during testing. It reaches a top speed of 200 mph.
The Plaid uses three permanent magnet synchronous motors to power all four wheels. Tesla pairs these motors with a single-speed automatic transmission that has an 8.28:1 gear ratio. The car weighs 4,828 pounds and sits on a 116.5-inch wheelbase. It rides on Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires and features multilink suspension at both ends.
Three permanent magnet motors deliver 1,020 horsepower through a single-speed transmission to all four wheels.
Tesla’s 99.3 kWh liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery pack provides an EPA-estimated range of 348 miles. Real-world highway testing shows about 280 miles of range. The car achieves 104 MPGe combined and uses 32 kilowatt-hours per 100 miles. Home charging at 240 volts takes 14 hours for a full charge.
The 2025 Model S Plaid starts at $94,990 to $96,630. The earlier 2021 model tested had a base price of $131,440. Current inventory shows prices ranging from $73,987 to $92,999 for different trim levels. The Model S doesn’t qualify for federal EV tax credits. The standard Model S starts at $81,630, offering better value with its 402-mile range compared to the Plaid’s reduced range.
Tesla updated the 2025 model with minor visual changes. The company added a new front splitter and rear diffuser. They also installed a front bumper camera and potentially larger wheels. These aerodynamic improvements help maintain the car’s 0.208 drag coefficient, the lowest of any production automobile.
Competition has intensified for Tesla’s flagship sedan. The Porsche Taycan Turbo GT with Weissach Package now rivals the Plaid’s performance. China’s Xiaomi SU7 Ultra has surpassed the Tesla in handling tests. Other new electric vehicles match the Plaid’s acceleration while offering fresher designs.
Inside, the five-passenger cabin includes a 22-speaker audio system with 960 watts of power. The car provides 28.2 cubic feet of cargo space. It features multi-device Bluetooth connectivity and NACS fast-charge port compatibility. The Model S measures 197.7 inches in overall length, making it a full-size luxury sedan.
Tesla backs the Model S with a four-year, 50,000-mile warranty. Model S owners can expect annual costs between $338–$580 for routine maintenance, which falls in the middle range compared to other Tesla models.
