norway s ev adoption surge

Nearly every new car sold in Norway is now electric. The country registered 9,291 electric vehicles out of 9,563 total new cars in July 2025. That’s a 97.2% market share for EVs.

Norway’s push toward electric vehicles has accelerated dramatically. In June 2025, EVs captured 96.9% of new car sales, up from 80% the previous June. Through the first six months of 2025, EVs averaged 92.7% of all new car registrations.

The change away from traditional cars has been swift. Petrol vehicles dropped to just 0.3% of new sales in June 2025, down from 1% a year earlier. Diesel cars fell to 0.8% from 2%. Hybrid vehicles saw the biggest decline, plummeting from 17% to 2% market share.

In raw numbers, July’s non-electric sales were tiny. Only 25 petrol cars, 86 diesel vehicles, 93 plug-in hybrids, and 60 regular hybrids found buyers. June was similar, with just 57 petrol and 142 diesel vehicles sold.

Tesla’s dominance in Norway’s EV market appears to be weakening. The American automaker slipped to fourth place among EV brands, as Norwegian buyers adopt more variety in their electric vehicle choices. Chinese brands like BYD and Xpeng are gaining ground with models that attracted hundreds of Norwegian buyers in May. The Tesla Model Y led June sales with 5,004 registrations, capturing 27.2% of the total market.

Norway set a target to sell only zero-emission new cars by 2025. Tax breaks and widespread charging stations have helped drive adoption. The country’s economic growth has also encouraged people to replace older vehicles. The average car on Norwegian roads is 11.5 years old.

Despite the surge in EV sales, most cars on Norway’s roads still burn fuel. EVs make up 28.9% of all vehicles, while diesel accounts for 36%, petrol 23%, and hybrids 12%. Experts predict EVs will outnumber diesel vehicles by 2032.

Total new car sales jumped 39.1% in June 2025 compared to June 2024. July registrations rose 50% year-over-year, showing strong demand despite the traditional summer slowdown. May saw 13,384 EVs registered, marking a 93.9% market share.

Norway’s rapid change to electric vehicles continues to outpace other countries. The nation’s aggressive policies and consumer enthusiasm have created a market where gas-powered cars have nearly vanished from dealerships.
