tesla enhances phone recall

Tesla’s 2025 Holiday Update introduced a new feature called Phone Left Behind Chime that alerts drivers when they’ve forgotten their phones in their vehicles. The feature became available starting with the 2025.26 software version released in August 2025. It’s now standard on Model 3, Model Y, and compatible older Tesla models.

The Phone Left Behind Chime addresses a common problem that’s frustrated Tesla owners for years. People frequently forget their phones on the wireless charging pads inside their cars. This can lead to security issues and even lock owners out of their vehicles. The feature integrates with Tesla’s broader security ecosystem, which includes multiple enhanced security options accessible through the vehicle’s touchscreen controls.

The Phone Left Behind Chime solves a persistent issue for Tesla owners who frequently forget phones on wireless charging pads, preventing security risks and vehicle lockouts.

Drivers can activate the feature through their vehicle’s touchscreen by going to Controls, then Locks, then Phone Left Behind Chime. No further hardware installation is needed since the system uses technology already built into Tesla vehicles. A simple toggle switch lets drivers turn the feature on or off whenever they want.

The detection system combines Bluetooth Low Energy and Ultra-Wideband technology to find phones accurately. The vehicle also uses seat sensors and cabin radar to perceive when people are leaving. The system checks the wireless charging pad status and uses proximity logic before triggering any alerts. This feature is available for over 6 million existing Tesla vehicles through over-the-air updates. Unlike some implementations, UWB compatibility is not required for the feature to function with most devices.

When the chime activates, it’ll make an audible sound through the vehicle’s external speaker. The car’s hazard lights flash twice as a visual signal. An on-screen animation appears near the lock controls showing the phone’s location. The side mirrors also remain unfolded instead of automatically folding. Moreover, the mobile app sends a push notification to the driver’s phone or account.

The feature works with both iPhone and Android devices, including newer Galaxy and Pixel phones. Older phones without Ultra-Wideband capability can still trigger the system through alternative detection methods. The phone must be recognized as a connected device or key for the system to operate properly.

This feature complements Tesla’s existing Sentry Mode and Security Alarm system. Together, they create a more extensive protection system for vehicles and their contents. Tesla vehicles also include Cabin Overheat Protection that automatically activates cooling systems when interior temperatures reach dangerous levels. Tesla’s designers created this feature after seeing countless complaints from owners who’d left their phones behind.
