Tesla has revealed a longer version of its Model Y SUV designed exclusively for Chinese buyers. The Model Y L stretches nearly 5 meters long and adds a roomier third row with six total seats. It’s the company’s first production car with this seating layout outside the pricier Model X.

The extended SUV measures 4,976 millimeters in length with a wheelbase that’s 150 millimeters longer than the standard Model Y. At 2,088 kilograms, it weighs more than regular versions but delivers impressive performance. The dual-motor setup produces 340 kilowatts of combined power. The front motor generates 142 kilowatts while the rear motor adds 198 kilowatts.

Chinese regulators certified the Model Y L with a 751-kilometer range using CLTC testing standards. That makes it Tesla’s longest-range SUV available in China. The extended range comes from an 82-kilowatt-hour battery pack made by LG Energy Solution. The battery weighs 1,025 pounds and achieves an energy density of 176 watt-hours per kilogram.

Tesla’s Model Y L achieves 751-kilometer range with LG’s 82-kilowatt-hour battery pack, setting new benchmarks for Chinese electric SUVs.

Tesla positioned the Model Y L between its standard Model Y and the luxury Model X. The six-seat configuration appeals to Chinese families who prefer flexible seating arrangements. The company won’t sell this model outside China, making it a market-specific offering. Tesla recently delivered 67,886 vehicles in July, though sales declined 5.2% from June levels. The Model Y L joins Tesla’s Chinese lineup that includes the standard Model Y starting at RMB 263,500.

The vehicle’s dimensions include a width of 1,920 millimeters and height of 1,668 millimeters. Engineers improved off-road capability with 16-degree approach and 18-degree departure angles. The top speed remains electronically limited to 201 kilometers per hour. For optimal daily use, Tesla recommends maintaining charge levels between 20-80% to preserve battery health over the vehicle’s lifetime.

Chinese authorities included the Model Y L in their 20th batch of electric vehicles exempt from purchase tax. MIIT approval means production can begin for a fall 2025 launch. The regulatory filing lists the gross vehicle weight at 2,651 kilograms.

Tesla’s strategy targets China’s growing premium electric SUV market. The Model Y L addresses specific needs of Chinese buyers while meeting local regulations. Its longer wheelbase, six-seat layout, and extended range distinguish it from Tesla’s global models. The exclusive availability reinforces Tesla’s commitment to customizing products for its second-largest market.
