While traditional luxury SUVs have dominated the electric market for years, Tesla’s updated Model Y is changing the game with bold new styling and impressive technology. The 2025 model features a full-width front lightbar that creates a futuristic look similar to the Cybertruck. Tesla’s removed traditional design elements for a cleaner appearance. A lower front splitter improves aerodynamics, helping the vehicle achieve about 20 additional miles of range.
The Model Y Performance packs serious power with 455 horsepower and 487 lb-ft of torque. Its all-wheel drive system provides better traction and handling on various road conditions. The Long Range AWD version accelerates from 0-60 mph in 4.6 seconds. Drivers can reach speeds up to 124.9 mph on highways. The single-speed self-shifting transmission delivers smooth power without any gear shifts.
Tesla’s engineering achievements show in the Model Y’s efficiency numbers. The SUV offers an EPA-estimated range of 337 miles on a single charge. It achieves 125 MPGe combined, with 134 MPGe in city driving and 117 MPGe on highways. The 78.4 kWh battery pack stores plenty of energy while consuming just 27 kWh per 100 miles.
Inside, the 15-inch center touchscreen controls most vehicle functions. The premium audio system includes 13 speakers with a subwoofer and dual amplifiers. Rear passengers get their own 8-inch touchscreen for entertainment. Bluetooth connectivity lets drivers stream music and media easily. The powered boot opening makes loading cargo more convenient. The cabin provides 41.8 inches of front leg room and 40.5 inches of second-row leg room for passenger comfort. The Model Y also features Cabin Overheat Protection that automatically activates when interior temperatures reach 104°F to protect surfaces and electronics.
Safety features come standard on every Model Y. The automated emergency braking system can detect pedestrians. Lane-departure warning works with lane-keeping assist to help drivers stay centered. Flexible cruise control enables semi-autonomous highway driving. Acoustic glass keeps the cabin quiet, while the stiffer body shell improves handling and comfort. All Model Y configurations can tow up to 3,500 pounds, though the hitch doesn’t come standard.
The Long Range model starts at $44,990, while the Performance version begins at $53,130. Tesla provides a 4-year/50,000-mile basic warranty and an 8-year/120,000-mile battery warranty.
The Model Y competes with vehicles like the Porsche Macan, Ford Mustang Mach-E, and Kia EV6. It’s earned a perfect EPA Greenhouse Gas Score of 10.0, demonstrating its environmental credentials.
