Tesla has rolled out its new six-seat Model Y in China, stretching the popular electric SUV to create more room for families. The company hasn’t announced plans to bring this longer version to other countries yet.
Tesla launches extended six-seat Model Y exclusively in China, targeting families seeking roomier electric SUVs.
The new Model Y features a wheelbase that’s 150 millimeters longer than the standard five-seater, reaching 3,040 millimeters total. It’s also 44 millimeters taller, giving passengers more headroom. Despite these changes, the vehicle keeps a similar overall size to the regular Model Y. The extended design targets Chinese buyers who prefer roomier cars.
Inside, the SUV uses a 2+2+2 seating layout with captain’s chairs in the second row. These middle seats come with heating, ventilation, pop-up armrests, and adjustable positions. The setup mirrors what’s found in Tesla’s Model X. Longer and taller door openings make it easier to get in and out.
Tesla upgraded the motors to handle the extra weight. The front motor produces 142 kilowatts while the rear generates 198 kilowatts. That’s slightly more power than the standard dual-motor version. The all-wheel drive system includes continuously variable damping suspension. The six-seater weighs 2,088 kilograms, which is 96 kilograms heavier than the regular version.
The six-seater can travel 751 kilometers on a single charge according to Chinese testing standards. That’s nearly identical to the regular Model Y’s 750-kilometer range. Both versions use the same 82-kilowatt-hour battery pack. Like all Model Y variants, it supports Supercharging up to 250 kW. Tesla managed to maintain this range despite the car’s larger size. As with all Tesla vehicles, the battery warranty covers eight years to protect buyers from degradation concerns.
The third row has some drawbacks though. People around 170 centimeters tall won’t have much headroom. A 100-millimeter floor hump makes getting to the back seats tricky. The rear seats don’t provide much thigh support and work best for short trips. Sitting close to the rear window might also mean more sun exposure.
Six-seat electric vehicles are becoming popular in China’s premium family car market. Tesla’s new model fits this trend for 2025. The company sees it as a way to compete in the luxury EV segment. For now, Chinese customers are the only ones who can buy this stretched Model Y. It adds to Tesla’s lineup without replacing existing models.
