After nearly a decade of waiting, Tesla has finally started distributing its Model Y electric SUVs to customers in India. The company officially began deliveries on September 27, 2025, marking its entry into the world’s third-largest automotive market. Grace Tao, Tesla’s Global Vice President, announced the milestone as the company fulfilled its long-awaited promise to Indian consumers.
Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik received the first Tesla on September 5, 2025. The first corporate delivery went to Inox group director Siddharth Jain. All the vehicles came from Tesla’s Shanghai Gigafactory in China.
Tesla’s pricing reflects India’s 70% import tariff on electric vehicles. The basic Model Y RWD costs ₹5,989,000, which equals about $67,500 to $69,000. The Long Range RWD variant costs ₹6,789,000, or roughly $76,500 to $79,000. Buyers can add the Full Self-Driving package for an extra ₹6 lakh.
Tesla Model Y starts at ₹59.89 lakh in India, reflecting steep 70% import tariffs on electric vehicles.
The RWD model comes with a 60kWh battery that provides 500 kilometers of range. It can accelerate from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in 5.9 seconds. The Long Range version has a 75kWh battery with 622 kilometers of range and reaches 100 kilometers per hour in 5.6 seconds. Both models hit a top speed of 201 kilometers per hour and include 19-inch alloy wheels.
Tesla’s Supercharging technology adds 267 kilometers of range in just 15 minutes. Customers can choose from six colors, including standard Stealth Grey, with black or white heated interiors.
The company received 600 bookings for the Model Y in India, falling short of expectations. Tesla plans to ship between 350 and 500 cars to India during 2025. Currently, deliveries are limited to Mumbai, Delhi, and Gurugram. Indian Model Y owners can expect their monthly electricity bills to increase by approximately 20-30% with moderate driving habits.
Tesla opened its first Experience Center in Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex in July 2025. It established a second showroom in New Delhi and plans to open a third in Gurugram. The company has installed multiple Supercharger stations to support early adopters. Maharashtra has introduced toll exemptions on the Atal Setu and Samruddhi Expressway to encourage electric vehicle adoption.
India’s electric vehicle market remains small, with EVs representing less than 5% of total car sales. However, EV sales jumped 93% to 15,500 units from April to July 2025. Tesla’s luxury pricing puts it in a segment that represents just 1% of India’s total vehicle sales.
