Tesla’s Actually Smart Summon feature might soon work in multi-story parking garages, addressing one of users’ biggest complaints about the system.
The feature, which launched in September 2025, currently lets drivers summon their cars through parking lots using the Tesla mobile app. However, it only works on single-level surfaces. Multi-story garages present a major challenge because GPS signals don’t work underground or in enclosed structures, making traditional routing impossible.
On September 28, 2025, Elon Musk responded “Not for long” to user complaints about these limitations. Tesla’s actively working to solve the technical challenges of multi-story garage routing. The enhancements are planned for the FSD V14 release, which targets low-speed maneuvers.
The upcoming update will let vehicles find their way from upper parking levels to ground floor exits automatically. Owners can wait near garage exits while their cars make the descent. The system will handle elevator or ramp routing without human intervention, eliminating the need for owners to climb stairs or take elevators to retrieve their vehicles.
Tesla’s Summon feature has evolved remarkably over the years. It started as basic Summon, became Smart Summon, and now carries the Actually Smart Summon name. The company considers it one of its most impressive driver assistance features. It’s included in Tesla’s Full Self-Driving package, which costs $8,000 and includes four features: Dumb Summon, Smart Summon, Self-Park, and Full Self-Driving.
Despite its potential, many users report the current system can be erratic or sometimes fails entirely. Range restrictions also limit effectiveness in large parking areas. The feature requires continuous visual monitoring even though it’s mechanized. Smart Summon operates within a 250 ft radius of the user’s location. User feedback drives Tesla’s focus on necessary improvements to address these operational challenges.
Multi-story car parks generate the highest volume of user complaints. The loss of satellite signals in these structures renders the current system useless, representing one of the biggest drawbacks users face.
Tesla previously listed destination parking options including garages in FSD V13.2.X release notes. The V14 update marks the first official news about specific Smart Summon improvements for multi-level structures, representing a major step toward truly autonomous vehicle operation.
